Conference Opportunities!

I am writing to inform you of the upcoming Minority Trainee Research Forum (MTRF) at the Fairmont Turnberry Isle Resort and Club in Aventura, Florida on September 4 – 7, 2008. MTRF is an invitational scientific meeting showcasing the serious trainees engaged in biomedical research. Selection is based on a national competition of abstracts form wet bench research. Twelve winning abstracts in each educational level will be selected for presentation: 12 postdoctoral trainees; 12 Ph.D. trainees; 12 M.D. / Ph.D. trainees; 12 M.D. trainees; 12 college / postbac trainees; and 12 high school trainees.

Each winner will receive a full travel fellowship (air, hotel, food) to MTRF, where they will give a 10 minute oral presentation and participate in the poster session, seminars, and awards dinner. We will have an expanded poster session daily for those trainees who were not among the award winners. This poster session is open to those trainees who have their own travel funds. Invitations are targeted towards underrepresented groups in the biomedical arena (African Americans, Native Americans, Mexican Americans, Mainland Puerto Ricans, Pacific Islanders, and Hawaiians / Alaskans).

I have attached the electronic brochure and application for your review.

The deadline for abstract submissions is July 30, 2008.

Please forward this email to your trainees and other interested parties.

The National Institutes of Health is actively recruiting candidates to participate in the upcoming National Graduate Student Research Festival, to be held September 11th -12th, 2008 on the NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland.

To be eligible, students (both US and international) must be enrolled in a PhD program in the U.S. and on schedule to complete their PhD degree between June 2008 and October 2009. We will select up to 250 students to spend two days discussing their research, meeting other students from around the U.S., learning about the research being done at NIH, and exploring postdoctoral training opportunities on the NIH campuses. Expenses will be paid by NIH.

The deadline for application is May 15, 2008 and the online application can be found on our website at http://www.training.nih.gov

The two previous Festivals were considered an unqualified success by both participants and NIH investigators. We anticipate that the 2008 Festival will be even more rewarding and informative for those who participate. I would be happy to answer any questions about the Festival - from you or your students.

Best regards,
Sharon Milgram
