STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK AT STONY BROOK
Medical Scientist (M.D./Ph.D.) Training Program

We are very excited to announce the development of a formal Physician Scientist Development Program in the University of Chicago's Department of Medicine.

Our Department has a long and strong tradition of training physician scientists through the ABIM's Research Pathway. Our nationally recognized internal medicine residency and fellowships, combined with our outstanding research enterprise, have provided an excellent training ground for aspiring physician scientists. This newly formalized PSDP program was created to take this experience to an even higher level.

Here are some highlights of the Program:

1. Its official name is the "Physician Scientist Development Program" (PSDP).

2. It allows students, with MD/PhD's, or students with equivalent experience who  are   interested in primarily research careers, the opportunity to pursue the ABIM's     Research Pathway (Short Track) into fellowship.

3. We will recruit up to 6 residents into this Program each year.

4. Candidates will apply to and be selected through a match dedicated to this
    Program.

5. The Program guarantees matching candidates a categorical residency and the     fellowship of their choice (providing specific circumstances are met.)

6. It also offers them substantial supplemental financial support beyond expected     stipends throughout residency and fellowship years.

7. Trainees who apply for an external career development grant award in the final year of their fellowship will be given automatic consideration for "bridge" funding and will be awarded a faculty position in their respective subspecialty Section. This approach guarantees assistance in the transition from fellowship to a junior faculty position  within the University of Chicago's Department of Medicine.

Please feel free to forward this email to students within your program. For more information on this excellent opportunity for your Internal Medicine bound MSTP students, please refer to the attached brochure or the PSDP website:
